Rubén Doblas Gundersen (born 13 February 1990), known as elrubiusOMG or El Rubius, is a Spanish YouTuber and Twitch streamer of Spanish and Norwegian descent, born in Mijas, Andalusia. He created his first YouTube channel in 2006 and launched the elrubiusOMG channel in December 2011, filling it with gaming montages, Let's Plays, comedy and vlogs. In February 2013 he became the first Spanish channel to reach one million subscribers, and in February 2015 the first to reach ten million. He shifted his focus to Twitch from 2018 and is also the author of the interactive book 'El Libro Troll' (2014) and the 'Virtual Hero' comic series.

Early lifeedit

Rubén Doblas Gundersen was born on 13 February 1990 in Mijas, Andalusia, Spain, to a Spanish father and a Norwegian mother named Bente. When he was three his parents divorced, and he and his mother moved to Bergen, Norway. He is of Spanish and Norwegian descent.

YouTube careeredit

Doblas created his first YouTube channel, 'elrubius', in 2006, uploading his first video, 'The audience', on 8 December 2006. He began regularly uploading Skyrim montages in 2011 and created the 'elrubiusOMG' channel on 19 December 2011, revealing his face in the video 'MI CARA' on 28 January 2012. In November 2012 he became the most-subscribed Spanish channel, surpassing Willyrex. In February 2013 he became the first Spanish channel to reach one million subscribers, and in February 2015 the first Spanish YouTuber to reach ten million.

Books and Virtual Heroedit

In 2014 Doblas published 'El Libro Troll', an interactive book that topped Spanish sales for eight weeks. In September 2015 he published his first comic, 'El Rubius: Virtual Hero', through Planeta, followed by 'Virtual Hero II: La torre imposible' (2016) and 'Virtual Hero III: La máscara del troll' (2017). The series was adapted into an anime that premiered on Movistar+ on 12 October 2018, described as the first anime series released in Spain.

Records and recognitionedit

In October 2015 Doblas received a Diamond Play Button at YouTube's 10th-anniversary party. In 2016 Time magazine named him among its 'next generation leaders'. In March 2018 he set a world record for a live YouTube broadcast during a Fortnite stream featuring around 100 Spanish-speaking streamers, drawing more than one million concurrent viewers and surpassing a previous record held by Ninja. His YouTube channel is the most-subscribed in Spain, and his Twitch channel has been ranked the fifth most-followed in the world.

Hiatus and move to Twitchedit

On 25 May 2018 Doblas announced a withdrawal from YouTube, citing stress, anxiety and nervousness; he had reached 30 million subscribers by July 2018. From October 2018 he announced that Twitch would become his priority platform. In January 2021 he co-created the 'Egoland' Rust series with Alexby11, featuring around 70 streamers, whose debut drew 1.2 million viewers.

Andorra moveedit

In January 2021 Doblas announced that he was moving to Andorra. The move drew public criticism from Spanish government officials, including politician Pablo Iglesias, over concerns about tax avoidance.

Other workedit

Doblas voiced a character in the Spanish dub of the video game 'Sunset Overdrive' (2014) and had a cameo in the film 'Torrente 5' (2014). He appears as a playable character in the games 'YouTurbo' (2016) and 'Watch Dogs: Legion' (2020). Documentaries about him include 'De Rubén a Rubius' (2018, Movistar+) and the Amazon Prime Video documentary 'Rubius X', announced in December 2021 for release in more than 240 countries.
