Dream, known publicly by his first name Clay (born 12 August 1999), is an American YouTuber and musician best known for Minecraft content. He created his channel in February 2014 but began regular uploads in July 2019, quickly rising to prominence with speedruns and his "Minecraft Manhunt" series. In April 2020 he co-created the Dream SMP, a collaborative multiplayer server whose livestreamed events drew more than a million concurrent viewers in January 2021. He operated anonymously behind a smiley-face avatar until revealing his face in October 2022, and by 2026 his main channel had roughly 44 million subscribers.

Dream was born on 12 August 1999 and, as of 2022, was based in Orlando, Florida. He has publicly stated that he was diagnosed with ADHD. He has kept most biographical details private, disclosing only his first name, Clay; his surname and birthplace have not been publicly confirmed. His anonymity became a defining feature of his public persona and of the fandom that formed around him.

YouTube careeredit

Dream created his YouTube channel on 8 February 2014 under the username DreamTraps but began uploading regular content in July 2019. He drew early attention that year for videos including one in which he reverse-engineered PewDiePie's Minecraft world seed. Across 2019 and 2020 his audience grew rapidly, and in December 2020 YouTube ranked him its #2 Top Creator and #1 Breakout Creator. By 2026 his main channel had roughly 44 million subscribers and about 4.85 billion views.

Minecraft Manhunt and contentedit

Dream's best-known format is Minecraft Manhunt, a hunter-versus-runner challenge in which he attempts to complete the game while friends try to stop him. The first installment appeared on 26 December 2019, and the series ran until February 2022, with its most-viewed episode reaching about 135 million views. His other content includes Minecraft speedruns and challenge videos, and he has also played games such as GeoGuessr.

Dream SMPedit

In April 2020, Dream and GeorgeNotFound created the Dream SMP, a private survival multiplayer (SMP) Minecraft server featuring loosely scripted major events performed live on YouTube and Twitch. Founding members included Dream, GeorgeNotFound, and Sapnap, with later additions such as TommyInnit, Technoblade, and Wilbur Soot. The server became a cultural phenomenon, with more than one million viewers tuning into its livestreams during January 2021.

Music careeredit

Dream launched a music career in 2021, releasing the singles "Roadtrip" (February 2021, with PmBata), "Mask" (May 2021), and "Change My Clothes" (August 2021, with Alec Benjamin). He signed with Republic Records in December 2022. His first major-label single, "Until I End Up Dead," arrived in June 2023, followed by the seven-track EP To Whoever Wants to Hear in September 2023, which peaked at number 173 on the Billboard 200.

Speedrun verification disputeedit

In October 2020, Dream submitted a Minecraft speedrun that was later scrutinized for statistically improbable item-drop rates. In December 2020, speedrun.com's verification team removed the run, estimating the odds of his luck at "at most 1 in 7.5 trillion." Dream initially disputed the finding with a commissioned statistical report, but in May 2021 he acknowledged that a "disallowed modification" had altered drop probabilities, saying its inclusion was unintentional and attributing it to a mod developer.

Face revealedit

Dream built his brand around anonymity, appearing only as a smiley-face avatar. On 2 October 2022 he published a video titled "hi, I'm Dream" revealing his face, which gained 21.9 million views within 24 hours. He deleted the video in June 2023 citing backlash but later re-uploaded it; by May 2026 it had more than 73 million views. He said the reveal would let him meet collaborators in person and pursue new kinds of content.

Dream won the Gaming category at the 2020 and 2021 Streamy Awards and the Gamer category in 2023, and was named Content Creator of the Year at The Game Awards 2021. In 2022 he received Guinness World Records for the most subscribers on a dedicated Minecraft YouTube channel and for the most-viewed Minecraft gameplay video.

Dream has been described as a polarizing figure; a 2020 SurveyMonkey poll of people familiar with him found 59.7% viewed him favorably and 22.1% unfavorably. He was doxxed on 1 January 2021 and later said the FBI had contacted him about a threat made against his life. In June 2021 he faced criticism over a charity-stream pledge but ultimately donated $140,000 to The Trevor Project.
